Mais uma entrevista…

Fletcher falou de muitos assuntos…Da sua musica preferida,World in my eyes,do Alan ter saído da banda,do Dave andar a escrever letras, dos seus álbuns preferidos,do som que a banda está a produzir agora,e tambem da atmosfera da banda actualmente.Aqui fica a entrevista…
World in My Eyes is your favorite Depeche Mode song?
Yes. It encompasses what Depeche Mode is about, the melody, the riff, the production, the words. When we play that song live, we sometimes look at each other and are like, “What have we done here?”
Since Alan Wilder left the group in 1995, the band’s music has moved away from those groove-oriented melodies and become more minimal. Was that a conscious decision?
Martin, who writes most of the songs, does enjoy minimal electronica music. We try to evolve as a band. The magic of those years was incredible. The type of music we want to make now is different.
How much do you miss that music?
I like all our music, but I have favorite albums. I like Black Celebration and Violator. It’s hard to beat Violator. The new albums are still worthy and relevant.
Martin is guiding the band’s new sound?
Dave writes some good songs, too. Martin does guide the musical direction a bit. His demos guide the direction. He worked very hard on the demos for Sounds of the Universe. We don’t plan the sound and the atmosphere. Our next album could be very different.
With Dave writing more songs on Sounds of the Universe compared to the last album, how has his involvement affected the band?
Dave’s writing has brought us closer together as a band. He feels creatively part of the band. He’s more involved in making the music. Dave always felt slightly uncomfortable as a lead singer in a big band. He was just coming in singing. Now he doesn’t feel so isolated. Dave has contributed to the great atmosphere we have in the band. It’s very joyful to be in Depeche Mode now.
Is that a refreshing change of pace from previous years when the band was in turmoil?
Being in Depeche Mode has always been joyful from day one. We had a few years when Dave was very ill that were tough, tough to keep the band going. It’s a nice atmosphere. It’s a different vibe in the band.
Martin has said that he has stopped drinking and Dave has said he’s clean and sober. Is the band more calm and focused?
It’s a great atmosphere now. Making the album was joyful, no friction. But, sometimes friction isn’t a bad thing with groups. The electricity produced by these individuals can make great albums. We’re pleased at this moment in our career to be enjoying ourselves. It’s a much better space for us now.

Stripped-down songs and a bundled up frontman still keep it fresh.

You needn’t have read about Dave Gahan’s recent illness to know that something was up with the Depeche Mode frontman Sunday night at the Hollywood Bowl, where the English electro-pop outfit played the first of two sold-out shows. After all, Gahan kept his shirt (well, actually his black leather vest) on for the entire two-hour concert — quite possibly an unprecedented event in Depeche Mode’s nearly 30-year history.

Since launching its current world tour in May, the band has canceled a number of dates as a result of Gahan’s health troubles, which have included a severe bout of gastroenteritis, a malignant tumor in the singer’s bladder and a torn calf muscle. Last week Depeche Mode called off shows in Mountain View and Chula Vista after Gahan’s doctor advised him to rest his voice.
At press time, concerts scheduled for later this week in Anaheim and Santa Barbara were still set to go ahead.

Given those afflictions, you could understand Gahan’s desire Sunday to guard himself against the chilly Los Angeles night. At one point the singer left the stage and returned wearing a sensible scarf. Yet if his wardrobe revealed that even rock stars are susceptible to the frailties of age, Gahan’s dancing and especially his microphone twirling — think of an Elvis Presley unafraid to embrace his inner disco diva — suggested otherwise.

The frontman’s singing was a somewhat different matter. More than once he ceded control of a selection’s chorus to guitarist Martin Gore or to the audience, which was happy to take responsibility for its delivery. And a handful of high notes seemed slightly out of Gahan’s reach. But for the most part here was a man determined not to allow infirmity to prevent him from selling a song.

Even the new ones: Depeche Mode is on tour in support of “Sounds of the Universe,” the studio disc it released earlier this year, and though Sunday’s show featured the usual cavalcade of catalog hits, it also pulled surprisingly heavily from the new album, the band’s strongest since the early ’90s.
Indeed, Gahan and his bandmates opened with three tracks from “Sounds of the Universe,” including “Hole to Feed,” which reflected their still-sharp ability to build spirited dance music around thoroughly dismal themes. “This world could leave you broken inside, with nowhere to hide,” Gahan crooned dramatically over a percolating industrial-rock beat.

Older material sounded fresher than you might have expected, in most cases as a result of the group’s stripping down the songs to their essential parts. “Policy of Truth” zipped along atop a lean New Wave groove, while “Enjoy the Silence” had a raw disco-punk throb that demonstrated the enormous influence Depeche Mode has had on younger bands like the Rapture and Interpol.

For “I Feel You” and “Personal Jesus,” Gore drew fuzzy garage-rock tones from his guitar, emphasizing the juicy contrast between his instrument’s organic intensity and the sleeker surfaces of the group’s computer-music rhythms.

After “Personal Jesus,” Depeche Mode closed the show — which by then had stretched to a second encore — with a hushed reading of “Waiting for the Night,” from the band’s smash 1990 album, “Violator.” It was an odd move, following an up-tempo take on what might be the band’s biggest hit with a spacey, low-key ballad, but hauntingly effective.

Entrevista @ Festival Lollapalooza ( 7-8-09)

Dave Gahan é um Deus no palco…

Aqui fica um report sobre mais um concerto dos DM…
O Dave é um Deus no palco dizem…

August 13, 2009
A show many Stateside fans were anxiously awaiting, Depeche Mode took the stage just as of Montreal played their final notes to an uproarious and eager audience. The New Wave legends’ influence on music is immeasurable – lead singer Petter Ericson Stakee of the British rock band Alberta Cross told JamBase that DM was probably the band’s biggest influence and described lead singer Dave Gahan as “a god on stage.” Live sampling and electronic dub segments have become so prevalent in mainstream rock music and much of that can be traced to Depeche Mode and their international popularity. As for the show, the band opened with a trio of new songs from Sounds of the Universe with “In Chains,” the single “Wrong” and “Hole to Feed.” Every headliner of the weekend had their own stunning visual display and DM’s video wall fit their style well. For “In Chains” the screen featured an old white man’s face next to a young black boy’s face. As the song progressed, the faces slowly transformed until the old white man was the young black boy and vice versa. (WH)
The crowd dynamic was something I had only previously witnessed watching videos of Glastonbury as the entire audience swooned with their hands in the air as DM poured through their vast catalogue with hit songs like “Enjoy the Silence,” “Personal Jesus,” “Policy of Truth” and “A Question of Time” rousing the crowd to their highest levels of euphoria. Gahan’s voice has a commanding power from the lower register that billows out clear as a bell all the way to the back of the field. Industrial strength drum lines and synth-ed out keyboards are Depeche’s modus operandi and seeing it unfold in the flesh is something I would have never imagined if they hadn’t been brought to the Lollapalooza stage. That’s the beauty of an event like Lollapalooza, as Perry Farrell told us the Monday before the fest when asked what his favorite thing was about music festivals, simply offering, “Everyone wins, the musicians win, [the fans] get to hear the music that they’ve been listening to on their iPods or online all year. They get to actually see them perform. Everybody at the festival wins.”

O lado sóbrio do Martin...

Entrevista muito boa a Mr. Martin L. Gore ao San Francisco Examiner...

SAN FRANCISCO — On first listen, Depeche Mode’s new “Sounds of the Universe” may seem like more of the UK trio’s sinister stock in trade — Gothic synth motifs backed by the funereal crooning of frontman Dave Gahan.

But delve deeper into the tracks — most composed by band Svengali and keyboardist Martin Gore — and a thematic pattern emerges: This is easily the most spiritual set of their three-decade career.

“That’s kind of how I see it, really,” says Gore, who just turned an unusually reflective 48.

“The album didn’t start making sense that way until I’d written songs like ‘Peace’ and ‘Little Soul’ — then I realized the bigger issues I was confronting.”
The “Peace” lyrics read like a reaffirmation of purpose: “I’m leaving bitterness behind this time/I’m cleaning out my mind … peace will come to me.”

Gore, who brings Depeche Mode to Shoreline Amphitheatre Wednesday, says he found serenity through sobriety. Three years ago, midway through a world tour, he quit drinking, cold turkey.

“I was suffering from panic attacks, I was always irritable and grumpy, and when I added up all the units of alcohol I’d been consuming, the total was truly horrifying,” he says. It was even scarier to realize “that I’d never been onstage sober in my life before. So this is the first tour I’ve ever done, alcohol-free, and I prepared for it like a professional boxer.”

Was there a final-straw moment when Gore knew he had a problem? He laughs.

“There were loads of those moments, but they never hit home,” he says. “I mean, I had seizures one day on a boat in a Louisiana swamp, and fell forward, just by chance. And if I’d have fallen backward, I would’ve landed in a swamp full of alligators — no joke. But even that didn’t stop me.”

Gore still gets mortality reminders, as on a recent Athens, Greece date, when Gahan was rushed to the hospital after collapsing in his dressing room.

“We are getting a bit older, proven by Dave’s cancer scare,” Gore says. “At first he was diagnosed with a stomach bug, but overzealous doctors did a scan and found a shadow on his bladder that turned out to be a malignant tumor. It’s a miracle they managed to catch it so early.”

Ultimately, Gore — a divorced father of three — wants to be around for his kids.

“So I’ve learned that for me, personally, drinking is not an option anymore,” he says. “The moment I open that door even a crack, it’s fully open within 24 hours. Because I could always find a reason to drink.”

Miles Away live @ NY (4-08-09)

Report do live @ Madison Square Garden...

Aqui fica uma reportagem sobre um dos concertos @ Madison Square Garden pelo The New York Times...

Synth From Depeche Mode At Madison Square Garden / August 4,2009

Dave Gahan’s voice has always had a disembodied quality, as if it were delivering stern disciplinarian instructions from an overhead speaker while a camera kept watch, making sure they were followed. That firmness was one of Depeche Mode’s anchors during the 1980s and early ’90s, first as new wave renegades, and later as innovators of industrial synth-pop.

It turns out, though, that Mr. Gahan is just a man, and one who likes to have fun at that: the body reveals the voice to be something of a lie. At Madison Square Garden on Monday night (there will be a second concert Tuesday), he was all smiles, even when his subject matter was gritty, a rock star long done with posing.

First appearing in a black blazer — later peeled off to reveal a black vest, later peeled off to reveal tattoos and a bare chest — and slicked-back hair, Mr. Gahan was debonair and feline, spinning like a figure skater and contorting his body, if not his voice.
His orders didn’t sound nearly so harsh as they do on record. In April Depeche Mode — Mr. Gahan, Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher — released its 12th album, “Sounds of the Universe” (Mute/Capitol/Virgin), on which the group again sounds like a young band — in this case, a young band aspiring to make records like Depeche Mode made in the ’80s. It’s artful but not emphatic, overlooking the fact that the hard clang of synth against synth against drums against more synths was one of the things that set Depeche Mode apart from its softer peers.

Those albums were harsh, seductive and often dissolute documents of eroticism and power, or eroticism and vulnerability, depending on the song. In some places here, the band achieved a similar thrill. “Master and Servant” pulsed with a cacophony of off-kilter synths. During “A Question of Time,” Mr Gahan gamely fondled his crotch while eyeing imaginary prey. “You’re only 15/ and you look good,” he purred. “I’ll take you under my wing/ like somebody should.” “I Feel You” was abrasively sexual, with Mr. Gahan returning his hand below his waist as Mr. Gore, on guitar, applied a roaring friction.Recent songs, though, were airless. “Hole to Feed” and “Come Back” had none of the ache of the band’s best material. And the effect was contagious, making some old songs (”In Your Room,” “Precious”) sound new, for the worse.

Mr. Gore, switching between several guitars, was essential, poking through the haze with taut riffs. Oddly, for surprisingly long stretches of time, Mr. Fletcher merely stood behind his bay of keyboards, shaking his hips or grinning or both. Or neither. (The three band members were joined by two additional players on keyboards and on drums.)

Midshow, Mr. Gore, the band’s primary songwriter but its secondary character, took center stage to sing a pair of songs, including “Home” from “Ultra,” one of the group’s later, lesser albums. Dressed in a sparkling silver outfit — vest, pants, cuffs — he was a loud sartorial retort to Mr. Gahan, though until this point, he’d stayed far out of the spotlight.”Home” is one of the few Depeche Mode singles sung by Mr. Gore, who normally cuts Mr. Gahan’s tense vocals with high, delicate harmonies. Here, he was almost desperate; it was easily the night’s most disruptive moment, but also the most moving. Had Mr. Gahan sung the same words, it would have sounded like defiance. But from Mr. Gore they’re tender, evidence of the beating heart beneath Depeche Mode’s rigor.
