David Gahan quietly lurked, death-disco pounded on

Depeche Mode frontman David Gahan quietly attended a listening party for Delta Machine, his band's upcoming 13th album, held last night at a posh Manhattan nightclub in Chelsea. The album was queued up, and the announcer from Columbia gave some bare facts before pressing play: It's 2013, 13th album, 13 songs, out March 22, and then, "This is their first album with us. We're happy to be working with them." The bar crowd talked loudly through the whole affair and when the final note played, it took a full 15 seconds before anyone noticed the silence. Someone clapped, hoping it wasn't just an electrical outage, and then the whole clan joined in. After another awkward moment, the club's mix kicked back in: "Suit & Tie." Everyone went back to drinking, as if they'd never heard a thing.

Here's what we heard, while sitting alone in a chair inside that sad, dark disco.

1. "Heaven" is a Fake-Out
For some unfathomable reason "Heaven" is the lead single for the album. It follows the template for every Depeche Mode song since producer Ben Hillier's arrival in 2005: a teasing, minimal drum line, bigger-is-better vocals, and a wide stereo chorus. The only thing out of that order here is the painfully slow tempo. A strong bass groove and tight drum fills shape this syrup into near-trip-hop, but Gahan barrels where he should be fragile. It's not a bad song, it's just not the best choice. The good news is that the single is a fake-out: the rest of Delta Machine is harder and weirder.

2. "Should Be Higher" Should Be Higher
This death-disco creeper is by far the best track on the album. All the traditional elements of Depeche Mode get held back or rearranged or sung in falsetto so that, while still classic, the song sounds fresh. It's also the best mix. You know that high whistle on U2's "With Or Without You," the one you can't forget once you hear it the first time? This song has the same thing, only it's a sizzle.

3. There Are More Songs About Faith and Devotion
Martin Gore said that this album would have the vibe of Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion, which is to say unapologetic pop tinged with blues and guitar. "Slow" and "Goodbye" are his takes on that tradition. The former throws out a big blues guitar line then wanders from the form into a hazy Spiritualized-style gospel choir. The latter is more traditional, a spartan hook turned lush at the chorus. With Flood's mix, it contains lovely musical moments of vocal excess shifting imperceptibly into instruments. For those of you reading song-lyric tea leaves, this track means just the end of album "goodbye, again," a bookend to the inconsequential opener "Welcome To My World."

4. Even Legends Suffer From Anxiety of Influence
Depeche Mode are in their third generation of being the biggest synth band on the planet, and for the last decade that honor has mostly been a songwriting curse. The attempts to put boundaries include the minimal techno track "My Little Universe" that actually mostly works, except when Gahan leaves the ominous reptition of "I let no one in / No one" to sing less pithy cliches. "Soft Touch/Raw Nerve" is a revision of history where DM was more industrial than pop when the instruments were and sounded hard. The less said about "Angel"'s mid-song techno identity crisis, the better.

5. Yes, Virginia, There's a Martin Gore Song
There's always at least one song sung for Team Gore, and this one is a bitter ballad. "The Child Inside" begins with a solemn Mingus-y bass line that adds big synth pads and flourishes of electronics but little percussion. Listening only once amid chatter made it hard to pick up all Gore's narrative, but we did catch this: "I can hear that dreadful sound / Watching from afar I see a child's drowned / The child inside your heart."

New Studio Album ‘Delta Machine’ Set For Release March 26th on Columbia Records

Depeche Mode to Debut Video for First Single ‘Heaven’ on VEVO Next Friday, February 1st

(Columbia Records; New York, NY; January 24, 2013) – Depeche Mode have announced they will release their highly anticipated 13th studio album, entitled Delta Machine, on March 26th worldwide via Columbia Records. The album, recorded over the last year in Santa Barbara, California and New York City, was produced by Ben Hillier and mixed by Flood. In addition to the album announcement, Depeche Mode have also confirmed that the video for the first single “Heaven” will debut on VEVO next Friday, February 1st. Alongside a standard CD format, Depeche Mode will release Delta Machine in an exclusive Deluxe Edition with four additional new tracks and accompanied by a 28 page hardcover book including photos by longtime artistic collaborator Anton Corbijn (please see track listing, as well as album and single configurations below).

Martin Gore said of the release, “Writing this album was incredibly daunting as I wanted the sound of this collection to be very modern. I want people to feel good about listening to this record, to get some kind of peace. It’s just got something magical about it.”

Dave Gahan added, “With this release we’ve completely shifted our idea of how to create an album. When we hit a wall where we realize the album is beginning to sound too normal, we’ll mess it up and really give it that organic Depeche Mode Sound. Delta Machine is no different, and I can’t wait for all of our fans to hear it.”

Following the release of their new album, Depeche Mode will embark on a European stadium tour, kicking off in Tel Aviv’s Hayarkon Park on May 7th. They will perform 34 shows in 25 European countries, featuring appearances at Milan’s famed San Siro Stadium, the Stade De France in Paris, and Moscow’s Locomotive Stadium before wrapping up the European leg of their tour in Minsk, Belarus on July 29. A full North American tour will follow, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Exibição de “A Strange Hour In Budapest” @ sala Black Box, Plataforma das Artes, Guimarães, Portugal, 23/11/2012

Depois duma noite mal dormida e tomado por uma enorme ansiedade, rumei a Guimarães (nome que o Alan não pronunciou da melhor maneira...) para o que prometia ser uma noite inesquecível com a chancela da SoundFactory. Do programa constava, além da exibição do Bluray “A Strange Hour In Budapest” do projecto Recoil, um raríssimo live act do grande Alexandre Fernandes, mais conhecido como Alex FX (devias fazer estas coisas mais vezes, pá!) e a oportunidade de estar finalmente frente a frente com um ídolo de seu nome Alan Charles Wilder!

Felizmente foi uma noite não muito fria que recebeu os muitos fãs que se deslocaram a Guimarães, havendo mesmo alguns a viajar do estrangeiro e ilhas para este evento imperdível e outros que tiveram a infelicidade de não conseguir bilhete à porta (sim, houve casa cheia)…Quanto ao local do evento, a Plataforma das Artes, é de facto uma plataforma para as artes, esperemos que façam pleno aproveitamento do espaço. A sala Black Box em concreto faz jus ao nome e qualquer fã de Recoil notará uma feliz coincidência...

Começa a noite com o “live act” do Alex FX, composto por 5 temas, todos eles acompanhados por filmes preparados pelo VJ Animatek, que merece rasgados elogios pelo seu trabalho para este evento. Os três primeiros temas escolhidos foram originais da sua já longa carreira, seguindo-se uma remistura do tema “Arrepio”, da banda portuguesa bueno.sair.es (sim, é um trocadilho com Buenos Aires). Para terminar, senhoras e senhores, Alex FX apresentou, num acto de grande coragem que exigiu nervos de aço, perante a vigia do Sr. Alan Wilder em pessoa e sem que ele soubesse de nada, a sua reinterpretação de um dos grandes hinos Recoil, “Want”, com vozes de amigos e colaboradores próximos do Alan. Após uma pequena pausa para recuperar o fôlego, começou a tão aguardada exibição do Bluray “A Strange Hour In Budapest”, que este vosso escriba adquiriu na altura do seu lançamento mas recusou-se a visualizar assim que soube da possibilidade de acontecer esta exibição do mesmo cá no burgo.
Alguns problemas técnicos no arranque da exibição não deslustraram o brilho intenso dum excelente documento dum concerto fantástico, graças ao excelente trabalho de Attila Herkó e a sua equipa. Um retrato poderoso dum concerto fenomenal em que o Alan, acompanhado do seu fiel amigo Paul Kendall em palco, desfila várias canções Recoil, como Prey, Hallelujah, Faith Healer ou Want, a que juntou algumas grandes canções dos Depeche Mode das quais ele obviamente não se esquece (Never Let Me Down Again – Aggro Mix, Walking In My Shoes – Grungy Gonads Mix) e ainda dois clássicos intemporais: “Warm Leatherette”, dos The Normal e “Are Friends Electric?” de Gary Numan e Tubeway Army. O som foi obviamente acompanhado por projecções de vídeos preparados por vários realizadores próximos do Alan e (muito bem!) aprovados por ele. Uma hora e 25 minutos de filme e o tempo passou depressa demais…Para ver e rever!

Chegou a sessão de perguntas e respostas e tivemos um Alan igual a si próprio. Simpático, honesto, directo, com um sentido de humor fantástico e com uma cerveja na mão, respondeu às muitas e na sua quase totalidade pertinentes perguntas que os presentes lhe dirigiram. Este vosso escriba não resistiu a perguntar-lhe o que reserva o futuro reserva para o projecto Recoil. O Alan adiantou que já está a trabalhar em música nova, mas que ainda não está definido em que direcção ela irá (ficamos à espera para ouvir). Deixei igualmente o repto para os fãs portugueses fossem presenteados no futuro para um concerto como o que tínhamos acabado de ver na projecção. Ficou prometido para uma próxima oportunidade, espero poder cobrar essa promessa em breve…

Seguiu-se a sessão de autógrafos no “foyer” do exterior da sala Black Box. O Alan não se furtou aos “flashes” e aos autógrafos de items Recoil e Depeche Mode, deixando a muitos fãs mais uma recordação duma noite inesquecível. Seguiu a festa no Centro de Artes e Espectáculos São Mamede, com muita e boa música a passar noite fora e muitas mais fotografias e autógrafos com o Alan, sempre disponível e muito bem disposto.

Ficam os meus agradecimentos ao Alex FX e ao pessoal da SoundFactory por nos terem proporcionado esta noite tão especial que perdurará na minha memória por muitos e bons anos…

Como parte integrante da Guimarães 2012 - Capital Europeia da Cultura, Alan Wilder vem a Portugal para uma das últimas exibições programadas do bluray do seu projecto Recoil "A Strange Hour in Budapest", lançado no passado dia 1 de Junho.

A decorrer na sala Black Box do Centro Cultural Vila Flor e com som e imagem do bom e do melhor, promete ser uma experiência inesquecível para os privilegiados que estejam presentes! Mas a noite não se limita à exibição do bluray, esta será precedida por um raro "live act" do grande fã nacional Alex FX, que incluirá algumas surpresas que deixarão os presentes boquiabertos.

Para os que quiserem continuar a festa noite dentro, haverá ainda uma "after-party" no Centro de Artes e Espectáculos São Mamede, a curta distância do Centro Cultural Vila Flor, com muitos DJs para animar a noite até a mesma terminar...
