SAW SOMETHING

“When we first started writing, I had that song in my head and in my heart; so I was dying to get on a mic and sing it. The lyrics are about sitting, waiting for something to come--protection of some kind, or some kind of answer. What I’ve come to learn is that you’ve got to go find it, take some action. I prefer to sit and wait, but it just doesn’t work. It sounds kind weird, but I do believe in that sort of divine intervention, if you allow it. If you allow life to happen, not try to push it in the direction you think it’s supposed to go in—which is what I spend a lot of time doing—then really amazing things happen, things that you didn’t expect. But you’ve got to take some action. This song, for me, is a starting point for something new in my life.”

“It’s this idea that there’s a better place, and it’s not up there in the clouds, it’s right here. And it’s about becoming more accepting of life and the way it is. “It’s one of my favorites, because it is so exposed. Visually, it’s kind of like coming in and out of the fog. Exposing a little bit of what I believe in but not really. “It’s about trying to believe there’s something at the end of the tunnel that will somehow solve all the problems; it’s that illusion. We recorded 'Endless' in five different ways. We went a really hard way with it, and that just didn’t work. Then Andrew and Christian went out and ended up at some club and the DJ did this thing where he reversed the beat; and they came back all excited about it. So we let Christian go at it and he came up with this very off beat. I think that even in a pop format, if you push yourself and allow the experimentation, the song can go in so many different ways; it's very hypnotic, but it's also a pop song."

A LITTLE LIE

“It has a John McGeoch/Siouxsie Sioux kind of vibe to it. It’s very gothic, and of course there’s nothing wrong with goth. It’s like those songs that have real highs and lows and take you to an odd, sort of ethereal place. A lot of Depeche songs have that feeling; Martin and I are very much minor chord people. The beat is a sort of swamp crawl, something from the deep South, which comes from me listening to John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. I was poking fun at myself a bit in this song, using this really bombastic opening, and then singing about how the time for that has sort of passed.”

DOWN

“It’s one of my favorites. It’s almost got a kind of country feel to it. It’s the last little reflection of where I left off with Paper Monsters. Visually it’s reflecting back to the days when I wasn’t participating in life. There are certainly times when I’m still, like, fuck it, let’s crack open the bottle of Jack Daniels.”

Dave Gahan's 'Hourglass'

The inimitable Dave Gahan makes a dynamic return on 22nd October with 'Hourglass' - his eagerly awaited second solo album. Best known as the iconic frontman of Depeche Mode, he continues his impressive career with a blazing new side-project, which follows his critically acclaimed solo debut 'Paper Monsters'.

Produced by Dave with Christian Eigner & Andrew Phillpott, both members of the Depeche Mode touring band, 'Hourglass' also reflects Gahan's growth as a songwriter. Initially showcased with 2003's 'Paper Monsters', he later wrote 3 stellar tracks for Depeche Mode's recent 2 million selling 'Playing The Angel' - 'I Want It All', 'Suffer Well' & 'Nothing's Impossible'.

Hourglass highlights include the gospel-tinged 'Saw Something', which kick-starts the album with stealth before effortlessly setting the tone for the other 9 tracks. "That was the catalyst that started the idea to write again," Dave recalls, adding that is was also "the first lyric, and the key to open the door to thinking, 'Okay, I can go here.'"

Other standout moments include the exhilarating, tour de force roar of 'Deeper and Deeper', the soaring epic first single 'Kingdom' (out on 8th October) and the addictive pull of 'Use You', where he scathingly lets loose his disgust with people, and specifically, himself. Meanwhile, on 'Down' - perhaps the most confessional song on the record - he confesses "I feel so old, down on the ground is where I'm bound to end up."

Sonically, the record cuts across a range of influences and styles with grace. Decidedly more electronic than his previous solo work, he has seamlessly swapped the guitar of 'Paper Monsters' for the synthesizer he epitomizes so well.

"It doesn't feel so much that the band is my identity anymore, although I owe everything to it. I'm starting to really feel that I have my own voice, and it's definitely coming out in the songs. For me, it's the best possible record I could make at this time. And it's gone well beyond what I expected of myself."

Opiniao...
Let me start by saying that this album is not "a little more electronic" than "Paper Monsters". It's ALOT more electronic!! And much edgier too. Those of you familiar with Eigner's solo album will hear his influence throughout the record. He's well and truly put his mark on it.

The opening song, "Saw Something", struck me as being a very atmospheric song. It's got a really nice build up to it, and leads you into the album in a great way. "Kingdom" is pure Eigner with Dave on vocals. A great track... "In your infinite wisdom / You show me how this life should be"... a hint of contempt in Dave's voice over this brooding, dark and upbeat song. Excellent choice for a first single.

"Deeper & Deeper" reminded me of Björk in places. The distorted vocals, the Basement Jaxx-esque intro, rigid programming, edgy sound. "I'm going down now / deeper and deeper / under you skin / you know that it's right". Kind of sums up the track too... it does get under your skin, and it does feel right!

"21 Days" could be a modern day re-make of "Pipeline". Slow, grinding beat with noisy, some times manic guitar stabs throughout, and gospel-esque vocals. This song needs a few more listens to really make sense of I think. It could be great... it was certainly interesting.

"Miracles" is the albums first bonafide miss. "I don't believe in miracles / They happen every day / I don't believe in Jesus / But I pray anyway" sings Dave, in what I thought was a sorely misplaced snoozefest. "Use You" is a welcome wake up call, and more than makes up for the couple of minutes you just wasted. Dry, distorted vocals, in your face and aggressive were some of the words I jotted down. The song has a great energy to it. Really liked this one!

"Insoluble" - the song I suspect was called "Love Will Leave" at some point - is another one that's hard to judge at first listen. To me it sounded like it could have been pulled from "Exciter"... a sort of "Comatose" part two. I know that will likely scare many of you, but I actually dug it. A slow song that was far from boring... can't wait to revisit this song!

"Endless" was the first song where I noticed the lyrics - or rather the delivery of them - kinda of slipping into a "Paper Monsters" universe. They just seemed a little awkward there for a minute, but not too bad. The track is VERY clubby, and is begging to be remixed... and remixed hard! Another one that I think will grow on me as time passes.

"A Little Lie" is probably the hardest song on there to really pin down. It's another one that builds. Lots and lots of electronics swirling around, playing off each other. It goes from being quite minimalistic to being quite grandiose. Very emotional.

For some reason, the only note I made for the song "Down" was sombre, and to be honest I don't even remember what exactly I meant by that. It just kind of failed to register with me. That isn't to say it was a bad song; just that my attention kind of slipped, I guess.

Anyway, there you go. I am looking forward to this album. A vast improvement over "Paper Monsters"; a daring record in some ways; one that I think will even get a few praises along the way from even Martin Gore.

It's a far cry from the garage rock shenanigans of "Paper Monsters", and - I think - even an improvement of what the trio behind it wrote for "Playing The Angel".

Numa conversa com fans,Fletcher disse que 9 musicas do proximo album ja estao prontas(claro que ainda vao passar pelas maos do produtor),sendo duas delas instrumentais...Ainda disse,que o som será entre o PLAYING THE ANGEL e o EXCITER(o que nos parece muito bem...).Sobre quando os DM iram entrar em estudio,Fletcher disse que tudo dependia da tour a solo do Dave,mas se esta nao se realizar,o previsto é começarem a trabalhar com o produtor em fevereiro/março de 2008...Será que é muita vontade de Mr. Fletcher,em ver um num novo album dos DM ca fora,ou será mesmo verdade???Aguardam se novidades...O rumor anda no ar!!!

O DMdevotion nasceu em finais de julho de 2006,logo estamos de parabens!!!Somos um bébé de um ano,é verdade,mas cheios de força!!!Aqui no DMdevotion tentamos estar sempre na frente a dar as novidades dos nossos DEPECHE MODE...Foi um ano de muitas noticias,mais as boas do que as más,felizmente,e uma que nunca esqueceremos,a do concerto que acabou por nao se realizar no estadio de Alvalade...Neste 1ano tambem lançamos as duas primeiras t shirts DMdevotion que foram um sucesso de vendas,e que podemos vos dizer que para alem de Portugal,as nossas t shirts andam pelas ruas do Brasil,Inglaterra,Espanha e Grecia...Sao mesmo muito bonitas,dizemos orgulhosamente!!!Ja agora informamos que a nova t shirt está a chegar,estejam atentos!!!Fizemos tambem uma compilaçao so com remixes dos DM que foi um sucesso,pelas opinioes dadas pelos DEVOTEES ao longo deste tempo...Aqui ficam os PARABENS,que no fundo é dedicado a todos os DEVOTEES que fazem com que o DMdevotion seja uma referencia para muitos DEVOTEES nacionais e mesmo internacionais...Parabens a todos os DEVOTEES e obrigado pelo apoio!!!O DMdevotion é vosso!!!
