"We first heard Achtung Baby working on Songs Of Faith And Devotion with Flood. It was the closest our bands ever got: U2 had become more electronic while Depeche Mode were working on a new rock vision. But there was never a rivalry. Bono used reverse psychology in his email, saying he totally understood why we'd say no. We just thought, Why not? So Cruel is Bono at his best, words-wise. And we couldn't tackle One - that would be almost sacrilegious"

With Depeche Mode on a break after another bumper world tour, bassist/keyboardist Andy Fletcher is enjoying his time off – by touring the world as a DJ. The mild-mannered Englishman shares his thoughts on the group’s phenomenal success and their chequered personal lives.
Look at today’s pop charts and you’re bound to see an assortment of dancefloor pounders, wistful ballads, rock anthems and catchy fluff aimed at teenage girls.

In fact, look at most pop charts in the last half-century and you’d find these four divisions have dominated in one way or another.

Which makes Depeche Mode that much more of an anomaly. Their pioneering brand of dark electronica surfaced in the early 1980s, with early singles Just Can’t Get Enough and See You capturing the public’s attention.

And yet while New Wave receded and synth-pop imploded, the Essex lads stood firm as a band who eschewed straightforward pop yet remained consistently popular.

Today the band are heralded as integral precursors to all manner of modern genres, and boast a fan base of loyal oldies and converted ‘noobs’ (proven with 2009 album Sounds of the Universe, which hit the top five in the UK and the US).

With Depeche Mode on a year-long break, bassist/keyboardist Andy Fletcher is continuing his second life as a DJ by embarking on a mini-world tour.

Playing Trilogy nightclub in Dubai tomorrow evening, Andy chatted to City Times about keeping upbeat.
What are the chief differences between touring alone and with Depeche Mode?

It’s a big difference. With Depeche it’s a gang – we’re kings of the city that night, VIP anywhere we want to go, and onstage we’ve got our mates with us. Plus if you’re DJing on your own and make a mistake, it’s down to you.

So it’s preferable to touring as a DJ?

No, I think the good thing about DJing is that it’s usually me and another guy, and everything is small. You go to dinner with the promoters, you tend to meet more people. It’s just a totally different experience.

Among the band’s many accomplishments is selling 100 million singles and albums. Does the sheer size of Depeche Mode still stun you ever?

You have to remember that we’re one of the old-style bands that actually grew from nothing. We’ve played youth clubs, pubs, small theatres, big theatres, arenas, stadiums…we come from a more traditional background, which a lot of artists these days don’t have. They’re superstars overnight.

How long did it take you to become superstars?

Well, first of all we were big in the UK, then we started to do well in Scandinavia, then Germany, then France, then the big surprise was when we broke in America. We didn’t really feel our music was suited to the States at the time.

What do you think struck a chord with Stateside audiences?

I think they were fed-up with Foreigner and Journey and groups like that. It was when alternative radio started to break in America, and fortunately we were one of the first bands they played. From that came other major American acts like Pearl Jam and Nirvana.

Your music has a reputation for its seriousness. What do you think of that?

We like to think there’s a prevailing sense of humour. It’s slightly angst-ridden, but we do different styles.

And personally, do people tend to think you’re all gloomy by nature because of your music?

We’re not actually gloomy by nature – people who meet us face-to-face don’t think so. We take our music seriously, but we write songs about everyday life.

Looking back, how will you remember the 2009-10 ‘Tour of the Universe’ to accompany the group’s 12th album?

It started off disastrously – my dad died on the first date, and Dave (singer Dave Gahan) was diagnosed with cancer on the second date. But we got ourselves together and it turned out really well.

You were famous for your wild antics on tour in years gone by.

Our fame was accelerating at a very fast pace. America’s a tough country, but once you start breaking big there everything’s available to you. It just became too much. Dave was a heroin addict, I was in the midst of a big depression and Martin (guitarist/songwriter Martin Gore) was drinking a lot. But I feel that every person will go through a bad stage at one point in their life. I had to learn what my weaknesses were, handle them and move on. Now we’ve got families and it’s a different world for Depeche Mode.

With all the drama, are you surprised that your line-up has seen only two changes in more than 30 years?

We’re quite lucky in that we come from the same town, have the same friends and share the same sense of humour. We’ve also been lucky with the people we’ve met over the years, like Daniel Miller from Mute Records. We were able to progress at our own pace, and weren’t forced by a major label to over-commercialise what we were doing.

Many modern bands cite Depeche Mode as an influence, from The Pet Shop Boys to The Deftones.

We’re now at an incredible stage of our career where we seem to be loved by everyone. New artists always cite us – it’s really just been a wonderful career. You can hark back to those few years we were in trouble, but it’s been a dream come true.

What’s the secret behind the band’s ongoing popularity?

We’ve consistently written good songs, we’ve had a good record company…lots of reasons.

So everything’s tickety-boo today?

You sound like a bloody doctor! Yeah everything’s excellent. I’m off to have my breakfast.

Então DEVOTEES o que acharam do dvd?O que mais gostaram,e o que menos gostaram?O que devia ter e não tem,etc etc etc...Enfim,deixem aqui as vossas opiniôes...
Depois de ver algumas vezes o dvd aqui fica a opinião do DMdevotion…
Vou deixar aqui os “mais” e “menos”…
+ A voz do Martin!!!Nota máxima,a idade deu lhe mais confiança e está simplesmente fantástica!
+ Pelo que já passou,o Dave continua um animal de palco,tentando sempre puxar(ao máximo) pelo publico!
+ Os ensaios da banda,muito boa ideia,mas soube a pouco…
+ O Peter e o Christian…Nunca liguei muito ás performances dos músicos em questão,mas neste dvd fiquei fan!!!
Para estarem acompanhar os DM á tanto tempo so podiam ser músicos de excelência!Quando o Alan voltar como vai ser?...

+- O documentário é mediano,esperava mais,muito mais!!!

- A voz do Dave…De ano para ano,ou melhor de tour para tour nota se que a voz cada vez tem menos “força”.Basta comparar algumas musicas ao vivo,
dos diferentes dvds e a diferença é abismal (infelizmente).
- A realização…Foi o que mais me desiludiu!!!Por vezes tem imagens brutais,sem duvida,mas no geral é bastante fraco…
Em determinadas musicas,quando a imagem está no publico ,devia estar na banda ou ao contrario!(achei isso diversas vezes)…
Os ângulos que apanham as câmaras fotográficas,telemóveis e afins é giro aparecerem uma vez,agora mais,parece me forçado e revela falta de ideias.
Perguntei a mim próprio,mas está tudo bem?Sinceramente esperava melhor!(Mas atenção prefiro bem mais a realização deste dvd do que do anterior,que pecava
por excesso de efeitos).
- O publico Espanhol!Mau demais para ser verdade.Ou estavam todos “fumados” ou então estava tudo a dormir…Uma palavra…Tristeza!!!
- Palco e projeçoes!Uma tour com o nome “Tour of the Universe” não merecia ter um palco mais grandioso???Parece me que sim…
Saudades do da Devotional…
Sobre as projeçoes,acho que se comparar mos os desta tour á da Devotional,por exemplo,parece que a “maquina DM” esteve a brincar em serviço!!!
Safa se uma ou outra,é pouco!!!

Enfim,as expectativas são sempre tão altas que ficamos sempre um pouco desiludidos aqui e ali…
Bem,vou ver mais uma vez o dvd e já volto… 

LAist: As Depeche Mode’s long-time webmaster, do you have every superfan's dream job?

Daniel Barassi: The short answer, to quote Dudley Moore in Arthur: "It doesn't suck".

The slightly more serious answer: “It is a great gig.” I've had the job now for over twelve years. Over the years, I have been allowed to give my input on releases, I have been able to do remixes (music production is my true love,) and I have been able to shape their web site into one of the best information sources on the net for the band.

How did you get that gig?

In early 1998, thanks to doing production work at Groove Radio 103.1 FM, I had a gig doing freelance production for Warner Brothers Records (radio edits, et cetera). One day, I was at Warners, pitching the idea for a special bonus CD for the upcoming Depeche Mode "Singles 86>98" hits compilation that was due to come out later that year. After the meeting, I took a walk to the end of the hall, and spoke to Jimmy Dickson, who at the time was working in New Media at Warners. We discussed Depeche Mode for a bit, and I expressed interest in working on their site. Initially, their manager was not interested in having a fan run the web site. After I faxed the manager a letter, however, I got the job, and I've been their web guy every since. As an extra bonus, the "Singles 86>98" compilation did come out with my bonus disc, albeit in a slightly edited form.

How many Depeche Mode shows have you seen?

Before working for the band, I had gone to about a dozen shows, varying from nosebleed seats to the second row. Since working for the band, it has been insane. I had never bothered to count before, but since 1998, I have been to nearly 50 shows, including both Depeche Mode as well as solo shows by both Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. That is not counting the sound checks, tour rehearsals or TV appearances. It is great to essentially have a free pass. The only flaw is that I am usually taking pictures or video recording the shows for the band's web site, so I never really get to "see" the shows until I watch the tapes afterwards. On this last tour, due to rules at the Hollywood Bowl, I wasn't able to film or photograph the band. It was actually a blessing, because I got to see again why they are one of my favorite bands.

Depeche Mode has gigged all over Los Angeles. What’s your favorite local venue to see them?

Oooh...that is a difficult one. While it was great to see the band play the historic Hollywood Bowl on this last tour, and in small places like the Roxy (a gig they did for the Exciter Tour,) my favorite venue wasn't a real venue. Last year, the band played to thousands on Hollywood Boulevard for a performance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. Seeing all the fans gathered (literally) on the streets of Hollywood, cheering and singing, was more exciting for me than any "proper" L.A. venue.

What was Alan Wilder's contribution to the band?

Speaking unofficially, as a fan, I always felt he brought their sound to a warmer area. When people speak of "synth-pop", it is usually with words like "clean", "cold", and "not human". Alan brought a human feel to the computers and synths. The amount of layers that his production techniques brought to the music of Depeche Mode created a sound that was rich, warm, and more developed than most of their musical peers. I defy anyone to go listen to "Violator", "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" or "Music For The Masses", and tell me the music sounds like anything that came from bands of the same era, let alone early Depeche Mode. The progression from "Just Can't Get Enough" to songs like "Clean", "In Your Room" and "Higher Love" is tremendous, and while Martin is the songwriter (and a damn fine one), Alan helped breathe life into those songs. Fans recently got to hear just how much life, when the "Sounds Of The Universe" album was released. On the Deluxe Box Set edition, there was an exclusive disc filled with demo recordings. Play one of the demos, then play the released version. You can hear Alan at work.

Who is Recoil for? -- Depeche Mode fans? Non-Depeche Mode fans?

Both. It goes without saying DM fans love Alan. Hell, there are fans that have yet to get over him leaving the band, and that was over 15 years ago now. I do believe "other" people would love his music as well. Anyone who likes the electro blues feel of Moby (who was on the 1992 Recoil album "Bloodline), Nitzer Ebb (who had some tracks produced by Alan, and whose lead singer Douglas McCarthy has appeared on a number of Recoil tracks), Massive Attack, Portishead, or is a fan of most of the music played on KCRW, would be wise to check out Alan's "Recoil" work.

You’ll be DJing quite a bit this weekend. What are your sets like?

Eclectic. I grew up with a mom who had a music collection that ranged from Sinatra to Suicidal Tendencies, and that comes through in what I play and mix. I never thought of it as wrong to throw a Public Enemy beat over Morrissey, or put the Beastie Boys rapping over the Super Mario Brothers theme song. I don't like to separate music by genres. If it is good, I will play it. With the public acceptance of things like DJ Hero, and of DJs like DJ AM (R.I.P.) and Z-Trip, my style isn't as odd as it once was considered.

Flash back to when I used to do mix sets occasionally for the Groove Radio "5 O'Clock Disc Drive" back in 1996. It was not exactly the same open musical climate as now. The listeners and jocks would love it when I'd mash up David Cassidy over The Chemical Brothers, or Soft Cell over Underworld. The music director at the time, not so much...

Any thoughts on what'll it be like to DJ alongside Martin Gore this weekend?

Surreal. I'm still trying to get it through my head that I will be spinning on the same stage as Alan Wilder and Martin Gore. Talk about pressure. I mean, the guys in the band know my mixes and mashups, but none of them have actually heard me spin live. It's going to be a bit odd doing my usual DJ thing with Martin and Alan there. Seriously, how do you mash something like the acapella of “Strangelove” over another DM track, while the man who wrote the songs is basically in the same room? Hmmm... maybe I should rethink my set.

Martin Gore is known for what he's known for, but how is he as a DJ?

I've heard Martin spin up in Santa Barbara a few times. Any musician can say they are a DJ, but it takes real skills to properly beat-match (mix) the music, and keep a crowd going. Martin does that, and does that very well. Every time I have seen him spin, I was impressed. Even if you don't recognize the tracks he is playing (essentially the best of the Beatport "Techno" and "Tech-House" sections), you will still dance your ass off. Martin makes sure of that.

What got you into making audio/visual mashups?

When I got my first double cassette deck (Fisher, Christmas 1982), I immediately started discovering the joys of pause-control editing. I used to spend hours on that tape deck, wearing out the pause control, splicing together all sorts of music. Later on, when I was able to get a proper DJ mixer (well...a Realistic mixer from Radio Shack), I started blending multiple records, and it just escalated my passion even more. Even at a young age, back in the 80s, I was always fascinated how some records just sounded perfect when mixed together, as if they were meant to be that way. What really got me going full steam was a clip I saw once on Yo! MTV Raps. Ed and Dre were in a record store, and the DJ in the store had a hip hop beat going, and then started scratching a Michael Jackson acapella over the beat. That messed with my head. From that moment, I always searched for rare acapellas and instrumental tracks, from thrift shops, to connections at record labels. Even now, you will find me digging through Amoeba for obscure records.

The video aspect of my mashups is a fairly recent addition. Simply put, I was tired of people making poor videos to my mashups, and throwing them on YouTube. If there is going to be a video to my mashup, I should be the one to do it. I am actually in the process of going back through the mashups I have online, and making videos for the older ones as well.

Synth veterans line-up three different versions of Spanish double header
Depeche Mode have announced plans to release a live DVD of two recent performances in Spain from their world tour.

Tour Of The Universe – Live In Barcelona features 21 tracks recorded over two nights at the Palau St Jordi in the city last November.

The release is set to come in three different formats, including a special four-disc version which contains the live show, a host of bonus content including four alternate bonus tracks recorded across the two nights, a tour documentary – Inside The Universe – two tracks filmed at tour rehearsals in New York and Anton Corbijn’s specially created Screen Films for seven tracks plus further bonus montages created from the onstage screens.

The super deluxe version will also come with two live CDs featuring the full 21 tracks from the performance, along with four promotional videos from their 2009 ‘Sounds Of The Universe’ album.

The deluxe version will contain the single DVD of the gig with bonus tracks and two audio CDs. Tour Of The Universe – Live In Barcelona will also be released on Blu-Ray.
